No. 4 Men's Ice Hockey Holds Off Amherst, 3-2

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Tyson Empey tallied a short-handed goal in the third period that proved to be the difference as the Knights held off Amherst, 3-2, on Saturday evening at Ira S. Wilson Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Amherst got on the board first, converting a breakaway opportunity midway through the first period to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • Geneseo responded in the second period when sophomore defenseman Matthew Doran finished a power-play opportunity to tie the game, 1-1. 
  • The Knights took a 2-1 lead with 3:11 remaining in the second period. Senior forward Conlan Keenan finished off a loose puck in front to give the home team the lead.
  • In the third period, with the Knights on the penalty kill, Empey stole a loose puck, skated past two defenders and beat the goalkeeper on a breakaway for a short-handed tally, putting Geneseo ahead, 3-1. 
  • Amherst scored late in the third period and threatened to tie the game, but the Knights held off the Mammoths for the win.

QUICK FACTS

  • Empey's short-handed tally was the Knights' first of the season 
  • Doran's goal marked the Knights' 13th power-play goal in their last four games. Doran has scored in back-to-back games.
  • Senior forward Andrew Romano finished with two assists to bring his season total to 15. 
  • Junior goalkeeper Aaron Mackay finished with 23 saves to improve to 4-1-0 in net this season.
