GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team is set to host Fredonia on Saturday (7:00 p.m.) in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Ice Hockey Semifinals at Wilson Ice Arena.
SETTING THE STAGE
Geneseo (22-1-2) earned the top seed for the SUNYAC Tournament for the first time since 2014 after compiling a 13-1-2 conference record this winter. Fifth-seeded Fredonia (15-7-4, 8-6-2 SUNYAC) upended fourth-seeded Buffalo State in overtime, 3-2, on Wednesday to advance out of the quarterfinals for the second-straight season. The winner will advance to next Saturday's (Mar. 2) championship game next to be played on the campus of the highest remaining seed. No. 2 Oswego hosts No. 3 Plattsburgh in this Saturday's other semifinal.
Saturday's game is a rematch of last year's SUNYAC Championship game won by the Knights, 7-1. Geneseo leads the all-time series with Fredonia, 28-12-2, including a 3-1 home win (Jan. 18) and a 6-1 road decision (Nov. 3) this season along with a 7-4-3 edge in 14 SUNYAC Tournament games. The teams last met in the SUNYAC Semifinals in 2006 when the tournament was decided using a best-of-two/mini-game format. Geneseo won the opener, 4-3, before Fredonia won the second game, 5-2. Geneseo won the mini game, 1-0, on the way to its second-straight SUNYAC title.
GENESEO IN THE SUNYAC SEMIS
Geneseo is making its fourth-consecutive appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament Semifinals and ninth since the tournament was changed to a single-elimination format in 2007. The Knights defeated visiting Buffalo State, 5-2, last year after falling at Plattsburgh, 5-2, in 2017 and besting host Buffalo State, 6-1, in 2016.
Geneseo has been ranked No. 2 in the USCHO.com and D3Hockey.com national polls for the majority of the winter. The Knights also sat no lower than second in the inaugural Division III Pairwise rankings – a system that will be used to rank the NCAA Tournament field based on a series of calculations and comparisons, including each team's ratings percentage index (RPI).
Six members of the SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team were voted SUNYAC All-Stars, announced Thursday. Senior goalie Devin McDonald, senior defenseman Duggie Lagrone and junior forward Conlan Keenan received first-team honors, while senior defenseman Mitch Ferguson, junior forward Andrew Romano and junior forward Tyson Empey copped second-team recognition as the Knights had the most honorees in the conference.
