GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team was ranked No. 1 in the inaugural NCAA Division III PairWise Rankings, released Wednesday by USCHO.com.
The PairWise Ranking (PWR) is a system that attempts to mimic the method used by the selection committee to determine participants for the NCAA Tournament. The PWR compares all teams by these criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, and the RPI.
For each comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based on the number of points (comparisons) won. Ties are settled by the RPI. A team's record is based only on games against other Division III hockey schools eligible for the NCAA Tournament.
The system will continue to update all 83 teams as game are played throughout the season and will be used to determine the 12-team NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time. The system has been used to determine the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament field since 2015.
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) currently has three teams ranked in the PWR top four, including No. 3 Oswego and No. 4 Fredonia. Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which sits atop the current USCHO.com and D3Hockey.com weekly national polls ahead of Geneseo, is ranked No. 2.
Geneseo hosts Fredonia this Friday (Jan. 18) at 7:00 p.m. at Wilson Ice Arena.
