No. 4 Men's Ice Hockey Skates To 5-2 Loss At Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Stephen Collins and junior forward Sotiri Athanasopoulos each scored a goal, but it was host Morrisville upsetting the No. 4 Knights, 5-2, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey, Friday.

Morrisville got on the board 1:38 into the contest on its first shot of the game, but the Knights answered just over three minutes later. Senior forward Connor Anthoine won a faceoff to the right of the Morrisville goal to Collins, who skated to the top of the slot and scored on a shot through a crowd with 15:11 on the clock.

However, it was Morrisville re-taking the lead on a goal by C.J. Stubbs with 26 remaining in the period for the 2-1 edge at the first intermission.

Geneseo (12-4-3, 6-3-1 SUNYAC) tied the game at the 11:51 mark of the second period. Senior forward RJ Burns won a neutral zone faceoff back to first-year defenseman Teddy McCabe who hit Athanasopoulos cutting down the right-wing boards at center ice. Athanasopoulos skated into the Morrisville zone and cut across the top of the slot, flipping a backhanded shot on goal that found its way to the back of the net for a 2-2 score with 11:51 on the clock.

Morrisville (3-14-3, 2-7-2 SUNYAC) once again re-gained the lead after Joseph Santino finished off a cross-ice feed into an open left post from just outside the Geneseo crease at 6:48 of the second period before making it a 4-2 edge with a power play tally by Mason Corliss 35 seconds into the third. The Mustangs added an empty-net tally in the closing seconds of regulation to seal the victory.

Geneseo out-shot Morrisville, 47-38, but it was Mustang goalie Jared Young making 47 saves to preserve the win.

The two teams will face each other again on Saturday with the Knights hosting a 7:00 p.m. face-off.
