GENESEO, N.Y. – Nine members of the 2017 SUNY Geneseo field hockey team were named to the Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad, while the team earned the NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award.
Senior midfielder Diana Ruggiero, senior forward Cara Stafford, junior midfielder Madison Albrecht, junior defender Tess Necaise, sophomore forward Erin Nolan, sophomore defender Gabrielle Sousa, sophomore midfielder Ariana Walczyk and first-year forward Jordan Penkitis were among over 1,700 student-athletes from across the country honored for compiling a minimum 3.30 grade point average through the fall semester. First-year forward Allison Prescott was named a Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Scholar of Distinction after she achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.
As a team, the Knights garnered the NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award for earning a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2017-18 academic year. Geneseo finished the season with a 10-8 record, including a 4-2 mark in conference play. The Knights finished fourth in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings and earned their eighth-consecutive trip to the SUNYAC Tournament, but fell in the semifinal round to top-seeded Cortland, 3-0.
