Head coach Kim Sanford begins her 17th season with the Knights in 2019-20. A native of Geneseo, Sanford has an associate's degree from SUNY Delhi and has been the coach of the college's equestrian club since 1996. The owner of Leg-Up Stables, Sanford was awarded the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce Farm of the Year in the spring of 2018.
The Knights rode in three home shows to open the 2018-19 season, and sent five riders to IHSA Regionals, held in Pittsford, N.Y. Nicole Solazzo '19 rode to second place in the walk trot canter to qualify for IHSA Zones, also in Pittsford. At zones, Solazzo notched a sixth-place finish in the walk trot canter.
During the 2017-18 season, Geneseo held a pair of home shows in October. The Knights sent six student-athletes to IHSA Regionals, hosted by Skidmore, where Alishah Bhimani '19 and Sarea Shariff '20 each qualified for IHSA Zones. At zones, Bhimani placed fifth in novice fences while Shariff earned third in the walk trot.
Sanford led the Knights in hosting three home shows in the fall of 2016 to begin the equestrian season. In the spring, the team competed at IHSA Regionals, taking third place while Anna Brogan '17 and Samantha Childs '18 each qualified for IHSA Zones. Brogan placed second in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter while Childs earned first in the Novice Flat division. At Zone Championships, Brogan earned 10th in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter while Childs garnered sixth place in the Novice Flat.
During the 2014-15 campaign, Sanford helped lead Katherine Nickels '16 to a fourth-place finish in Novice Fences at the IHSA Zone 2 Championships. Nickels qualified for the show by winning the Novice Fences class at the IHSA Regionals. Tessa Horn '17 placed 10th in Walk Trot after winning the event at regionals to mark the ninth time in 10 seasons Sanford guided a rider to Zone Finals.
Under Sanford's watch during the 2013-14 campaign, Allie Catalino '14 finished seventh in Novice Equitation Over Fences at the IHSA National Horse Show, becoming only the second Knights' rider to advance to the national championship show. Sanford also coached Katie Roberts '10 to a third-place effort in Open Equitation in 2010.
Sanford is a New York State licensed veterinary technician, medical laboratory technician and research technician and is a member of the Genesee Valley Pony Club, the Genesee Valley Hunt and the Genesee Valley Riding and Driving Club.
She is the owner and trainer at Leg Up Stables and manages the 300 acre farm which is home to approximately 70 horses and will continue to serve as the host site for SUNY Geneseo's Equestrian team.
