George Gagnier begins his sixth year as assistant athletic director, 30th as a member of the Geneseo Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation staff and 35th overall at the College in 2017-18.
As assistant athletic director, Gagnier is responsible for facility operations and scheduling, supervises the event management staff, coordinates intercollegiate contest schedules and contracts and continues to serve as the chair and emcee for the Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame selection committee and induction ceremony.
Gagnier began his service in Geneseo athletics as the team manager and then assistant coach for the men’s basketball program under Tom Pope. During his seven-year assistant tenure, the Knights posted a record of 138-55 with four appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament, including three visits to the Sweet 16. Recruitment efforts during his time resulted in 14 All-SUNYAC certificates, three of the program’s seven All-America awards and four Geneseo Sports Hall of Famers, including 1994 NCAA Division III Player of the Year, Scott Fitch.
While coaching, Gagnier worked in the Office of Residence Life at Geneseo, serving as the residence hall director of Ontario Hall for three years and spending one year each as the residence hall director of Onondaga Hall, the assistant director/area coordinator of Mary Jemison quad and the associate director of residence life.
In fall of 1995, Gagnier left Residence Life and moved to the administrative side of the athletic department, spending the next 17 years as the College’s sports information director, where he was responsible for covering all contests, publicizing Geneseo’s student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators and coordinating the Blue Knights Roundtable booster club. During his tenure, Geneseo expanded to 20 sports with the addition of women’s lacrosse in 1995-96, women’s field hockey in 1997-98 and women’s equestrian in 2004-05. In addition, Gagnier oversaw development of the initial athletic web site, live stat offerings, web streaming capabilities and social media presence.
Gagnier coordinated and served as emcee for the annual Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony, organized and served as emcee for the annual Athletic Awards banquet and served as staff advisor to Geneseo’s award-winning Student Athletic Advisory Committee. The SAAC was recognized for their community service efforts by NADIIIAA on multiple occasions, including the 2007 Community Service Award in the on-going project or activity category for their annual leaf raking project for senior citizens. Gagnier culminated the athletic communications portion of his career by serving as host for the 2011 ECAC-SIDA professional development convention in Rochester, N.Y.
A 1988 graduate of Geneseo with a bachelor’s degree in biology with secondary education certification, Gagnier earned his master’s degree in education from Nazareth College in 1994. A member since 1997 at Livingston Country Club, he has served two stints on the Board of Directors, including assuming the President’s role in November, 2017.
A native of Hilton, N.Y., Gagnier resides in Geneseo with his wife, Tracy ‘93, the assistant director of alumni relations at SUNY Geneseo, and their children, Makenna (20) and Jack (16).
