GENESEO, N.Y. - Three SUNY Geneseo student-athletes earned PrestoSports Athlete of the Week honors handed out by the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) on Monday afternoon. Women's volleyball senior Sam Mendelsohn, field hockey junior Jordan Penkitis and women's soccer senior Taylor Clar each earned the award.
Mendelsohn was named PrestoSports Defensive Player of the Week as she anchored the Geneseo defense during a week that included a pair of key SUNYAC victories. She compiled a career-high 32 digs in Saturday's 3-2 victory at defending SUNYAC Champion New Paltz after picking up 14 digs in Friday's 3-2 win at Oneonta. She currently ranks second the SUNYAC with 4.83 digs per set while the Knights became the first team to clinch a berth in the conference tournament with a 7-0 league record.
Penkitis earned PrestoSports Offensive Player of the Week honors as she scored her first career hat-trick in last Wednesday's 5-0 victory over visiting Keuka before adding a goal in Geneseo's 3-2 victory at defending SUNYAC Champion New Paltz on Saturday. The Knights won their ninth-consecutive decision to break a tie for second-longest winning streak in program history while winning the 11th game in their last 12 outings. She was named PrestoSports Defensive Player of the Week last week, becoming the first Knight to win the Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week award in back-to-back weeks.
Clar as named Defensive Player of the Week after she played a vital role in the Knights' two SUNYAC victories and help the team clinch a conference tournament berth. Against Fredonia on Friday, Clar scored the game-winning goal with under 15 minutes to play, leading the Knights to a 2-1 victory. At Buffalo State on Saturday, Clar anchored the Geneseo defense as it limited the Bengals to just five shots in a 3-0 shutout.
