Held, Garcia-Cassani and Kersch Named SUNYAC Athletes of the Week

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo women's track & field junior Shayna Held, men's track & field senior Isaac Garcia-Cassani and softball sophomore Ashlyn Kersch were each named State University of New York Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Held won the heptathlon at the Cortland Classic Invitational with a program-record 4,685 points that is the fourth-ranked total in Division III this spring.

Garcia-Cassani finished third in the Mike Brady Invitational Mile at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday. He crossed the finish line with a 4:01.35 clocking, finishing less than a second behind Olympian/Adidas runner Robby Andrews (4:00.50) and only .09 behind Princeton senior Garrett O'Toole, who came from behind to just nip Garcia-Cassani at the finish line with the second-fastest mile (4:01.78) in Princeton program history. Garcia-Cassani's time converts to the top 1,500 (3:43.71) in Division III this spring by over four seconds.

Kersch tossed three complete games, going 3-0 to lead the Knights to a 5-1 mark against conference opponents this week. She twirled a five-hit shutout against Fredonia, earning a 7-0 victory for Geneseo. Against Oswego, Kersch allowed three unearned runs, scattering four hits to help the Knights to a 5-3 win. At Cortland on Sunday, Kersch limited the Red dragons to three runs, striking out six batters to earn a 4-3 win. The sophomore pitcher is now 8-1 on the year with a 1.03 ERA in 61.1 innings pitched.
