Cergol Named AVCA All-Northeast Region

2017 AVCA DIVISION III ALL-REGION TEAMS

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore outside hitter Grace Cergol was named First-Team All-Northeast Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), announced Thursday.

Only the fifth player in program history to be honored by the AVCA, Cergol joins Kate Barth '05 as the lone Knights to be tabbed first-team all-region selections. Cergol also moves on to the national ballot where she will be in the running to become only the second All-American in program history and first since Barth was recognized in 2004.

Tabbed the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection earlier this week, Cergol finished the season ranked seventh nationally and first in the league with 4.34 kills per set. Also finishing 10th in the SUNYAC with 3.55 digs per set, she was the only player in the conference to rank in the top-10 in both categories.

Named the SUNYAC Player of the Week a conference-high four times throughout the season, Cergol's 486 total kills are currently the 12th highest total in the nation and rank as the third-highest single-season total in program history.

Cergol will enter her junior campaign 12th on Geneseo's career lists with 907 kills and 15th with 860 digs. Only two other players in program history rank in the top-15 in both categories, including Barth (1st - 1,558 kills/14th - 935 digs) and Cherisse Rehman '04 (5th - 1,090 kills/12th - 975 digs)

Geneseo finished the season with a 23-11 record for its highest win total since 2004. Compiling a 7-2 SUNYAC record, Knights clinched the third seed and a bid to their second-straight conference tournament. Geneseo advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row after sweeping sixth-seeded Cortland in its first home playoff match since 1996.  The Knights' season came to a close after a 3-0 setback to second-seeded Fredonia in the tournament semifinals.
