GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo first-year outside hitter Grace Cergol and first-year libero Sam Mendelsohn were named members of the 2016 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Volleyball All-Conference Team.
Cergol was named a second-team all-star after finishing the season as the only player in the conference ranked in the top-five in both kills and digs. She led the SUNYAC with 421 kills while also tying for fourth with 462 digs. Compiling 22 double-doubles in kills and digs throughout the season, she was credited with a career-high 22 kills in a five-set victory at Rochester (Sep. 10) as well as in a five-set win over visiting St. John Fisher (Oct. 19). She also totaled a career-best 26 digs in a five-set loss at Skidmore after also compiling 23 digs in a three-set sweep versus Frostburg State (Sept. 17). Cergol also finished in a tie for eighth place in the league with 47 service aces.
A third-team honoree, Mendelsohn ended her first season in a Knights' uniform ranked fifth in the SUNYAC with 448 digs and sixth with 3.83 digs/set. Compiling double-digit dig totals on 22 occasions, she logged eight matches with at least 20 digs, including a career-best 27 in a five-set victory at Pitt-Bradford (Sept. 29) as well as 26 in the Rochester win. She also led the squad with 24 digs in Geneseo's 3-1 setback at Brockport in the SUNYAC Tournament Semifinals.
The Knights finished the season with a 17-15 record, including the program's first postseason appearance since 2011. Seeded fifth for the SUNYAC Tournament after compiling a 5-4 league mark, Geneseo upset fourth-seeded Fredonia, 3-0, before falling to the top-seeded and eventual champion Golden Eagles.
