BROCKPORT, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year outside hitter Grace Cergol totaled 13 kills and 17 digs while senior outside hitter Tricia Baxley added 12 kills, but it was top-seeded Brockport earning a 3-1 (25-7, 25-15, 26-28, 27-25) victory to knock the fifth-seeded Knights out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Semifinals, Friday.
First-year libero Sam Mendelsohn was named to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 24 digs in the match after also chipping in 17 in Tuesday's 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-22) quarterfinal victory at Fredonia.
Brockport (31-3) jumped out to a quick 14-2 lead en route to the decisive first-set victory. The Golden Eagles broke open a close second set, using a 10-5 spurt to turn a two-point game into an 18-11 edge that proved insurmountable.
The Knights rebounded to take a tight third set. Trailing, 18-13, Geneseo scored five-unanswered points, including a pair of service aces by first-year outside hitter Abby May, to tie the game, 18-18. Neither team led by more than a point down the stretch until back-to-back kills by Baxley and Cergol clinched the two-point third-set win.
In the fourth set, the Knights led by as many as three, including a 19-16 edge on a Baxley kill, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 6-2 spurt to take their first lead, 22-21. Tied, 25-25, Brockport closed out the match scoring the final two points to earn the win.
Geneseo's season ended with a 17-15 record, including its first postseason appearance since 2011 as well as its first SUNYAC Semifinal showing since 2010.
