UTICA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year outside hitter Grace Cergol totaled nine kills and nine digs while senior outside hitter Tricia Baxley added nine kills to lead the Knights to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-20) sweep at SUNY Poly, Friday.
Geneseo (12-10) opened a quick 6-1 lead to start the first set, but the host Wildcats (14-7) came back to tied the score, 16-16. Knotted, 20-20, the Knights won five-straight points, including two kills apiece by Cergol and senior middle blocker Courtney Cleary, to close the set.
Tied, 2-2, early in the second, Geneseo used an 11-1 run, including four Cergol service aces, to break the set open. Leading by as many as 14, 19-5, down the stretch Baxley and Cergol accounted for two kills apiece to close out the 12-point win.
The Knights controlled the third set from the start, building a seven-point edge, 14-7. The Wildcats rebounded to pull within four, 22-19, but a Cergol kill followed by an assisted block with first-year middle blocker Abby May, finished off the match.
Sophomore setter Emily Ast directed the Geneseo attack to the tune of 31 assists while also picking up eight digs. Senior defensive specialist Danielle Sayler totaled a team-high 11 digs, followed by first-year libero Sam Mendelsohn's 10.
Geneseo is scheduled to host St. John Fisher on Wednesday (Oct. 19) at 7:00 p.m. in the final home match of the regular season.
