GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior outside hitter Tricia Baxley totaled a match-high 10 kills while first-year outside hitter Grace Cergol added nine kills and 10 digs to lead the Knights to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19) sweep of visiting Farmingdale State. The win was Geneseo's fourth in a row and fifth in six outings.
The first set saw the Knights bounce back from an early 12-7 deficit with a 6-1 run on the serve of senior defensive specialist Danielle Sayler that included a pair of service aces. Farmingdale pulled within one, 17-16, but a 5-0 run that included a pair of kills by first-year middle blocker Abby May staked the Knights to a 22-16 lead it would not relinquish.
Geneseo broke the second set open with an 8-0 spurt, included three service aces by Cergol and three kills by Baxley, that yielded a 13-5 lead. Trailing, 19-8, the Rams scored five-consecutive points to pull within six, 19-13, but the Knights scored six of the final eight points to earn the 10-point victory.
In the third set, Geneseo opened a 5-0 lead but Farmingdale used an 8-4 run to make it a one-point affair. However, the Knights responded with a 9-0 run on the serve of sophomore setter Emily Ast as the Knights took control en route to the sweep.
Geneseo returns to action this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8, with three State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play matches at New Paltz. The Knights will take on the host Hawks on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before facing Plattsburgh (10:00 a.m.) and Brockport (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
