ROCHESTER, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year outside hiter Grace Cergol totaled a double-double 10 kills and 16 digs while first-year defensive specialist Sam Mendelsohn added 18 digs to lead the Knights to a 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 25-10) victory over Hamilton on the first day of action at the University of Rochester Invitational, Friday.
Senior middle blocker Courtney Cleary added a team-high 12 kills as Geneseo (1-4) earned its first victory of the season.
Tied 8-8 in the first set, Geneseo used a 7-0 run that included a pair of kills by senior right side Emma Lannon to take a 15-8 lead. The Knights scored 10 of the final 14 points, including three-consecutive kills by Cleary, to clinch the 11-point win.
In the second, Geneseo built a 15-8 lead, but it was the Colonials bouncing back with a 10-4 run to pull within one, 19-18. The Knights were able to close the set down the stretch including a pair of Cleary kills, one of which was the set clincher.
Hamilton used a 5-1 spurt to take a 10-5 lead early in the third that grew as many as eight throughout the set. Trailing, 19-11, Knights got as close as five, 22-17, and fought off three-straight set points before succumbing by the four-point margin.
Geneseo took control early in the fourth, jumping out to an 8-2 lead before the Colonials responded with a 5-1 run to get within two, 9-7. However, the Knights pulled away, scoring 11 of the final 12 points of the match to close out the match.
The Knights have two more matches scheduled for Saturday and will square off with Utica at 1:00 p.m. before facing the host Yellowjackets at 3:00 p.m.
