SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Recent SUNY Geneseo graduate Alex Wandy finished 11th at the 2017 USA Track & Field Outdoor National Championships in the triple jump on Thursday in Sacramento.
The only NCAA Division III athlete in the 16-member field, Wandy finished with a mark of 12.65m (41'6") but missed the finals as the top eight competitors advanced.
Wandy swept national championships in the triple jump at the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor Championships this past year, including the second-longest jump (13.00m, 42'8") in Division III history in winning her outdoor title. She became only the second triple jumper in Division III history to hit the 13-meter plateau and was the first since McMurray's Darcell Edwards set the Division III record (13.45m/44'2") in 2004.
Last week, she extended her personal-best effort (13.18m/43'3") in finishing first at the USATF Club Championships at New York City's Icahn Stadium to qualify for next week's national championships.
Wandy ended her collegiate career as an eight-time All-American and a three-time national champion after also winning the long jump at the indoor championships this past winter.
Up to three individuals that compete in each event at USATF Nationals will also be invited to compete at the 2017 IAAF World Championships, based on qualifying. The World Championships will be held in London, U.K. from August 4-13.
