BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team faced three State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rivals in pool play this weekend, defeating Plattsburgh, 7-2, but falling to New Paltz, 9-0, and Oneonta, 7-2.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 - NEW PALTZ 9, GENESEO 0
The Knights took a loss in their first match of the weekend as the Hawks earned a 9-0 victory. Senior Nina Lurie and first-year Julianna Schulz battled to force third sets in third and fourth singles, respectively, but both fell in super-tiebreakers as Geneseo was blanked.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 - GENESEO 7, PLATTSBURGH 2
Lurie and Schulz were double-winners on Saturday as the two teamed at third doubles to earn an 8-3 victory. Lurie went on to win 6-0, 6-0 at third singles while Schulz took fourth singles, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Sam Montague and sophomore Dana Sorrentino each earned singles victories at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively, while first-years Ana Amorim Da Silva Gusmini and Olga Shvetsova notched an 8-3 win at first doubles.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7 - ONEONTA 7, GENESEO 2
Lurie and Schulz earned another doubles victory, this time at the third flight, 8-4, but the Knights trailed, 2-1, after doubles play. In singles, Schulz earned a fifth-flight straight-set victory and Montague battled to force a third set at sixth singles, but Geneseo fell, 7-2, to the Red Dragons to cap the weekend.
The Knights earn the third seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will face second seed Oneonta again on Saturday, October 13 in the semifinals at Binghamton Racquet Club. Top seed New Paltz will face fourth-seeded Fredonia in the other semfinal match.
