Women's Tennis Wins 2016 SUNYAC Championship

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team captured its sixth-straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship with a 5-1 win over New Paltz in the tournament final, Monday, at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The championship was the Knights' 10th overall and eighth in the last 10 seasons.

Sophomore Vanessa Lam-Tran was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP after compiling a 5-0 overall record during the championship, including a 3-0 doubles record with junior teammate Sienna Susko.

The Knights (9-1) took a 3-0 lead after sweeping the opening three doubles matches, before sophomore Nina Lurie and junior Rachel Ollis claimed straight-set wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to clinch the win.

The win was Geneseo's 39th-consecutive victory against SUNYAC opponents. Its last defeat was during the fall of 2012, when New Paltz took a 5-4 win. Prior to that loss, the Knights had captured 42 straight matches against conference foes, giving Geneseo an 81-1 record in its last 82 matches against SUNYAC teams dating back to the 2006 season.

Geneseo and New Paltz are familiar foes at the conference tournament, having met in the last six SUNYAC title matches. In the last 11 seasons, the Hawks have been the runner-up in each of Geneseo title seasons, while Geneseo finished runner-up to New Paltz in 2006, 2007 and 2010.

It was the second title in as many years for Knights' head coach Jason Stephens. Geneseo's total of 10 conference titles trails only Binghamton's 12, captured before the program moved to Division I.

With the victory, Geneseo clinched an automatic bid to its eighth NCAA Division III Tournament in the last 10 years, including its sixth in-a-row. The NCAA Tournament will be contested in May following the end of the spring season.
