AMHERST, MASS.– SUNY Geneseo seniors Cat Crummey and Marylen Santos teamed for a win at number-one doubles and each claimed a victory in singles, leading the Knights' women's tennis team to a 5-0 win over Ithaca in first-round NCAA Tournament play on Friday.
Geneseo (15-3) moves on to face host Amherst, ranked seventh nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Crummey and Santos captured the final three games of their number-one doubles match, pulling away from a 5-4 margin to take the 8-4 win. The number-three doubles team of junior Maggie Hale and sophomore Lauren Salzano won by the same margin, while the number-two team of sophomores Rachel Ollis and Anika Pornpitaksuk rallied from an early deficit to win 8-6, giving the Knights the important 3-0 lead going into the singles.
Crummey was down 2-3 in the first set in her match at number-one singles, but pulled out a 6-4 win and then blanked her opponent in the second set, 6-0. Santos jumped out with early service breaks in both sets at number-two and took her match 6-1, 6-1 to close out the contest with the decisive fifth point.
Pornpitaksuk (number-three), Salzano (number-four) and first-year Sabrina Ferretti (number-five) all had leads in their singles matches when play was ended.
The win advances the Knights into the second round for the third-straight season and for the fifth time in seven NCAA appearances. The last two seasons Geneseo defeated Elizabethtown in the first round.
Geneseo, ranked No. 14 by the ITA in the Northeast Region, will play Amherst on Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m. The host Purple & White, ranked No. 7 nationally and No. 4 in the Northeast Region, are in the tournament for the 22nd-consecutive season and received a first-round bye for the 13th-year in a row. The two teams have played twice in the NCAA Tournament, with Amherst taking second-round wins in 2012 and 2015.
