Women's Tennis Upsets #37 St. Lawrence

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo seniors Marylen Santos and Cat Crummey earned a win at number-one doubles and each took their respective singles matches, helping lead the Knights' tennis team to a 5-4 win over #37 St. Lawrence on Saturday. First-year Sabrina Ferretti claimed the winning point at number-six singles, as the Knights close out their regular season at 14-3.

The Saints came into the match ranked No. 37 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and No. 13 in the Northeast Region and had won their last five matches. Geneseo was ranked No. 18 in the latest Northeast Region poll.

The Knights took two of three doubles matches, with the team of first-year Corinne Heitmann and sophomore Rachel Ollis capturing their match at number-three, 8-5. The 8-4 win by Crummey and Santos at number-one was over the St. Lawrence team of Georgia Comber and Morgan McNeal, ranked No. 9 in the Northeast Region.

Crummey and Santos extended the lead to 4-1 with wins in their respective singles matches, but St. Lawrence closed the margin to 4-3 with two matches still in progress. Ferretti closed out her match in a second set tiebreaker, 8-6, to secure the decisive point.

Santos continues to add to her career tennis records, as she holds the Geneseo program records for career wins in singles (65), doubles (72) and total (137) in her four seasons with the Knights. Crummey, ranked No. 24 in singles in the Northeast Region, has moved into the program top-10 lists in just two years at Geneseo. Her current total of 40 singles wins places her in a tie for seventh; her 42 doubles victories ties her for 10th and her 82 total wins has her tied for ninth.

The match closes out the regular-season for the Knights. They'll await word on dates and opponents for their fifth consecutive appearance in the upcoming NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
