FREDONIA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore midfielder Maddie Lee and first-year midfielder Tessa Doody each totaled three goals and an assist to lead the Knights to a 13-10 victory at Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's lacrosse action, Tuesday.
Sophomore attack Hannah Millich added three goals as Geneseo (7-7, 4-3 SUNYAC) overcame a three-goal first-half deficit with a decisive 8-1 run to take a 10-6 second-half lead it would not relinquish.
Goals by Lee and junior attack Rachel Fisher got the Knights out to a 2-0 lead with 24:54 on the clock, but the Blue Devils (3-13, 2-5 SUNYAC) responded with a 5-0 run over the next 13 minutes to forge a 5-2 lead at 10:59.
Millich's started a 4-0 Geneseo spurt with a goal at 9:38, before a score by Doody followed by two-straight Lee goals helped reclaim the visitors a 6-5 lead with 3:06 left in the half. Fredonia scored 29 seconds later, but senior attack Lauren Corbett pushed the Knights back on top with with 45 seconds remaining for a 7-6 halftime edge.
Geneseo scored five of the first six goals of the second half to pull away. Doody started with a goal at the 28:36 mark before sophomore midfielder Carly Cullen netted a pair of tallies for a 10-6 Knights' lead at 20:34. Fredonia responded with a score at 18:14, but goals by Doody and Millich gave the visitors a 12-7 edge to put the game out of reach.
Junior midfielder Erin Cregan collected a team-high four ground balls while Doody led the way with four draw controls.
Geneseo closes the regular season this week, hosting St. John Fisher on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before entertaining SUNYAC-rival Potsdam on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. A win over the Bears would clinch the Knights the third seed for the conference tournament as well as a quarterfinal home game on Tuesday (May 2) against an opponent to be determined.
