GENEVA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Erin Cregan netted a goal and dished off an assist to finish with a team-high two points as the Knights fell to William Smith, 7-5, on Sunday afternoon at Boswell Field.
Cregan added a team-high three ground balls and a caused turnover while sophomore goalkeeper Tess McFadden finished with five saves. Senior attacker Kathleen DePillo, sophomore midfielder Carly Cullen, senior midfielder Lauren Corbett and junior attacker Hannah Millich each added a goal for the Knights as well.
William Smith tallied first with a goal 2:17 into the game but Cullen responded by burying a free-position shot with 19:31 remaining in the first half to tie the game, 1-1. The Herons took a 2-1 lead at the 16:44 mark but back-to-back goals by Cregan and Millich put the Knights ahead, 3-2, with 5:20 to go. The home team managed a goal with 3:56 left to tie the game at 3-3, which stood as the halftime score.
The Herons regained the lead 2:38 into the second half with a goal, but Geneseo rallied to go ahead, 5-4. Corbett and DePillo each netted unassisted scores to put the Knights in front with 21:12 remaining in the game. From there, the Knights were held scoreless as William Smith tallied three unanswered goals en route to the two-goal victory.
Geneseo (1-1) will travel to Rochester on Wednesday to take on the Yellowjackets at 4:00 p.m.
