No. 9 Women's Lacrosse Slips Past Fredonia, 9-8
GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior attack Katey Hart scored three goals, including the eventual game-winner, to slip past Fredonia, 9-8, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at Saratoga Field on Wednesday.
Senior attack Caroline Buonocore added two goals and one assist in the win.
The Blue Devils (8-3, 2-1) opened the scoring in the third minute of play as Fredonia junior attack Katie Glagolev took a pass from senior defender Katie Kleine from behind the net. One minute later, Katie Kleine assisted another goal with a pass to first-year midfielder Kristie Kleine. The Knights (8-1, 1-1) quickly responded back as Buonocore netted her 25th goal of the season.
Fredonia extended its lead four minutes later on a free position shot. However, Geneseo would score four unanswered goals to end the first half leading 5-3. Sophomore attack Tara Basile converted a free position shot at 19:53. Seven minutes later, sophomore midfielder Liz Felix brought the ball up the right side of the Fredonia goal and banged it in for the equalizer.
Buonocore scored her second tally of the day on a free position shot nine minutes later. Finally, Hart banged in a shot with 00:45 on the clock.
Coming off four unanswered goals, Geneseo started the second half with another as senior midfielder Kylie Caesar took an assist from Buonocore to double the score up on Fredonia, 6-3. The Blue Devils followed up with two goals to bring the score within one. Kristie Kleine assisted on both of them at 19:53 and 16:42.
Geneseo answered back with two goals of its own. Felix passed the ball to Hart for another mark at 12:44. Three minutes later, senior attack Emily Haggerty took the ball across the net on an unassisted eighth tally for the Knights.
Down 8-6 with nine minutes to go, Fredonia bounced back with a flurry of goals. First-year attack Emily Polizzi stationed in front of the goal and took a quick pass from Kleine to bring the Blue Devils within two. Within the next three minutes, Fredonia converted another free position shot and added another goal to tie up the score, 8-8, with 6:23 to go.
Hart was able to pull off another goal to regain the lead for the Knights with three minutes remaining. A Geneseo turnover gave Fredonia possession for one final attempt. With :02 on the clock, Knights junior goalie Laura Passamonte made a snap save on a low shot from close range by Fredonia's Marissa Cussins to preserve the win for Geneseo.
Passamonte totaled six saves and three ground balls to hold off the Blue Devils and secure the win for the Knights.
Geneseo will hit the road again this weekend for a game at St. Lawrence on Friday, April 11 at 4:00 p.m. and a game at Potsdam on Saturday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m.
