ONEONTA, N.Y. - Sophomore forward McKenna Brooks recorded a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the SUNY Geneseo Women's Basketball team to a 55-38 victory over State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Oneonta on Friday night.
With the win, the 18th-ranked Knights (22-0, 15-0 SUNYAC) clinch the SUNYAC regular season crown, the top seed and the right to host the SUNYAC Tournament. Geneseo earns the top regular season conference record for the second time in three seasons.
Senior guard Kayleigh Cavanaugh scored 10 points while senior forward Bridgit Ryan added nine points and nine rebounds for the Knights. Geneseo held Oneonta to just 25.5% shooting from the floor and the team's lowest offensive output in conference play this season.
The Red Dragons got out to a fast start, going 6-for-12 from the floor in the first quarter to take a 17-14 lead after the initial frame. The Knights turned the tables on their hosts in the second quarter. Geneseo finished the first half on an 11-0 run, holding Oneonta scoreless over the final 5:41 of the half to take a 30-21 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Geneseo continued to extend their lead. Cavanaugh netted seven of the team's 14 points in the period as they held off the Red Dragons. The Knights allowed just five fourth quarter points as they rolled on to the 55-38 win.
Geneseo will take on New Paltz on Saturday afternoon in their final road game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
