GENESEO, N.Y. - The No. 23 Geneseo Women's Basketball team maintained its perfect season on Tuesday night, fighting for a 61-47 victory over conference rival Buffalo State at Schrader Gymnasium.
Sophomore forward McKenna Brooks continued her stretch of stellar play, leading the team with a career-high 22 points and pulling down nine rebounds adding a block and two steals. Senior guard Katie Durand added 15 points while senior forward Bridgit Ryan and senior guard Kayleigh Cavanaugh each pulled down eight boards.
The Knights played their trademark stellar defense, holding the Bengals to just 31.6% shooting on the evening, but struggled from the floor themselves shooting just 15-for-48 from the floor. The squad did a large portion of its offensive damage from the foul line, netting 26 free throws. Buffalo State outrebounded Geneseo 44-35, but turned the ball over 15 times to just seven for the home team.
In the first quarter, both teams had trouble finding their range. The Knights were held to just 3-for-12 shooting from the floor in the period as the Bengals jumped out to an early 11-10 lead. Geneseo righted the ship in the second by attacking the basket and getting to the foul line. The home team scored nine of its 15 points in the quarter from the line and took a 25-21 advantage into the half.
In the third quarter the Knights showed off their nationally-ranked defense, holding the Bengals without a point for the first 7:58 of the period as they built a 36-21 lead on an 11-0 run. Geneseo held onto its double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game and went onto the 14-point victory over Buffalo State.
The Knights improved their impressive winning streak to 18 games, including an 11-0 mark in the SUNYAC. The squad will take to the road for five straight, beginning with a run-in with Cortland on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
