ALFRED, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore outfielder Danni Napoli finished with four hits on the day while sophomore pitcher Alyssa Persich went 2-for-3 and took to the rubber in game two as the Knights fell to Alfred, 9-4 and 3-2.
Geneseo opened the game with a three-run first inning as sophomore infielder Anna Merante, senior infielder Abby Dennett and first-year infielder Maddison Tucker each drove in a run. After Alfred plated a run in the bottom of the inning, Napoli responded with an RBI double in the second to put the Knights ahead 4-1.
From that point, the Saxons scored eight unanswered runs, including three unearned, to go ahead and take the first contest, 9-4.
Persich tossed 6.0 innings of scoreless softball, recording three strikeouts and letting up just three hits but ran into trouble in the seventh. The Saxons turned three hits into three runs and walked off on a sacrifice fly to left to end the game.
Geneseo's two runs both directly involved the sophomore pitcher. Persich drove in the first with an RBI single in the third and then came around to score on a Merante RBI single in the sixth.
Geneseo will finish its regular season with a home twinbill against Oswego on Friday and two against Cortland on Saturday. The team will celebrate Faculty Recognition, Cancer Awareness Day and Little League Day on Friday and hold a brief senior recognition on Saturday.
