Big Inning Affords Softball Split At Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore infielder Anna Merante hit two home runs in game one of the Knights' doubleheader as the team split two games with State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Fredonia, winning game one, 9-7, before falling in game two, 5-0.

Merante went 4-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and a career-high five RBI to propel the Knights offense to a 9-7 win. She blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give Geneseo a 2-0 lead, and after a six-run outburst by the Blue Devils tied the game with a three-run blast in the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Danni Napoli and junior infielder Julia Lalka each drove in a run in the inning while sophomore catcher Taylor Fedor ripped a two-run single to provide the difference for the Knights. Senior pitcher Alexis Kidder allowed one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief to earn the victory for the Knights in the circle.  

Senior outfielder Alyssa Presutti recorded two of the Knights' five hits as the team was shutout by the Blue Devils in the second game. First-year pitcher Ashlyn Kersch recorded eight strikeouts, bringing her season total to a team-high 57, but allowed five runs on seven hits as the Knights fell to their conference foe.

The Knights will travel to Alfred on Monday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader.
