Home Runs Not Enough As Softball Falls to Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore outfielder Danni Napoli, sophomore infielder Anna Merante and senior outfielder Alyssa Presutti each homered, but it wasn't enough to propel the Knights' offense to a win as the team dropped two to Buffalo State, 7-3 and 6-5.

Geneseo fell behind, allowing the Bengals four runs in the first inning on a grand slam, but chipped away with two runs in the top of the third. Sophomore catcher Taylor Fedor and Presutti brought in runs with a pair of RBI singles to make it 4-2, but the hosts added to their lead with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to make it 7-2.  In the sixth, Napoli uncorked a solo shot over the left field fence, but it was all the offense the Knights could muster as the team fell 7-3.

Geneseo grabbed a 1-0 lead, manufacturing a run in the top of the first on a pair of Buffalo State errors, but the Bengals responded with a six-run bottom half of the inning to make it 6-1. In the third inning, Presutti left the yard, driving an opposite-field home run over the right field fence to make it 6-2. Senior pitcher Alexis Kidder quieted the Buffalo State bats over 4.1 innings of relief to give the Knights a chance at a comeback. In the seventh, Presutti sparked a two-out rally as she and Napoli hit back-to-back singles to bring up Merante. The sophomore hammered a pitch to dead center, over the wall to bring Geneseo within a run, 6-5, but the team couldn't scratch across the tying run and fell to the Bengals again.

The Knights will travel to Fredonia to take on the Blue Devils in another State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
