GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior Isaac Garcia-Cassani was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Track & Field Men's Track Athlete of the Year, while Chris Popovici was named the Coach of the Year, announced Wednesday.
Garcia-Cassani was honored following a winter that culminated in being crowned national champion in the mile at the NCAA Division III Championships. Crossing the finish line with a 4:07.77 clocking, he was named the Outstanding Male Track Athlete of the Meet by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after also anchoring the Knights distance medley relay team to a second-place finish, joining sophomores Luke Holtzman, Zachary Hannahoe and Gillan Faulkner to post a time of 9:59.64.
Popovici garnered his first SUNYAC Coach of the Year award after leading Geneseo to a sweep of both the men's and women's SUNYAC team titles last month, while both teams went on to post top-10 finishes at the NCAA Division III Championships. The third-year coach guided the men to their first indoor title since 2012, while it was the first women's championship since 2006.
