NAPERVILLE, Ill. - SUNY Geneseo junior Isaac Garcia-Cassani was crowned National Champion in the mile at the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, Saturday, hosted by North Central (Ill.).
Garcia-Cassani bested the field with a 4:07.77 clocking, edging St. Olaf's Joe Coffey (4:08.29), who finished runner-up. Making his third-straight appearance in the race, he broke through after posting third-place showings the past two seasons.
It was Garcia-Cassani's second All-America honor of the week after anchoring the Knights' distance medley relay team to second place on Friday night. Sophomores Luke Holtzman, Zachary Hannahoe and Gillan Faulkner posted a time of 9:59.64 to finish national runner-up.
Garcia-Cassani is now a six-time track & field All-American, also logging a third-place effort in the 1,500 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships last spring. He has also posted three All-America cross country finishes, including a personal-best fourth-place showing this past fall.
Garcia-Cassani is the eighth individual national champion in Geneseo history across all sports, bringing home the 10th national title in school history. He is also only the second male national champion, joining 2016 3-meter diving national champion Samuel Randall.
