Men's Swimming & Diving Upsets No. 17 Case Western Reserve on Senior Day

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior Matt Mattera swept the distance freestyle events, taking first in the 1000 and 500 free to lead the Knights to an upset victory over No. 17 Case Western Reserve on Monday at Alumni Pool.

Mattera touched in 9:55.20 to earn the victory in the 1000 free and finished in 4:49.97 to win the 500 free. Junior Mitchell Phelps was a double-winner for the Knights as well, taking first in the 200 fly (1:58.71) and the 100 fly (52.46). Junior Kaz Sampson placed first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.00 while sophomore Will Eng won the 50 free (22.30) and sophomore Harry Harkins took first in the 100 free (48.26). The Knights swept the relay events, taking first in the 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay. First-year Corey Wirth swept the diving events with classmate Ben Wilcox earning second in each event. 

The Knights recognized seniors Clark Davis, Denzel Flowers, Matthew Modelewski and Joseph Ruggiero in a pre-meet ceremony. The Class of 2019 has led Geneseo to three-straight conference titles and a combined dual meet record of 55 wins and 10 losses in their four-year careers.

Geneseo moves to 5-1 in dual meets and will finish its dual meet season by hosting Rochester on Friday, Jan. 25 at 6:00 p.m.
