GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Men's Soccer team will begin their quest to return to the postseason on Saturday, Sept. 2 when the team takes on Baldwin-Wallace as part of the Penn State Behrend Invitational. The Knights have come up one win short of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) postseason in each of the last two campaigns, but are poised to earn a playoff berth in 2017.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dillon Medd returns to anchor the Geneseo defense after earning all-conference honors in 2016. Medd led the SUNYAC with 86 saves while finishing second with an .843 save percentage and tied for third with six shutouts last year. Senior defensive backs and captains Kevin McGrath and Nick Keneally return alongside junior defensive back and captain Greg Baumstein to form an experienced back line in front of Medd. Sophomore forward Bryan Wager returns as the team's top scorer, netting a pair of goals and passing off three assists last season. Senior forward Alex Clar netted one goal and gave out three assists in 2016 and will return for his final season in 2017.
Head Coach Dominic Oliveri has brought in a first-year class of seven and added a pair of transfers as well. Senior forward Joey Vucic joins the Knights after time spent with both Fredonia and Buffalo State. As a member of the Bengals in 2014, Vucic netted 10 goals and garnered All-SUNYAC second team honors. Junior midfielder Isaac Sanabria comes to Geneseo after two years as a member of the Potsdam team. In two years with the Bears, Sanabria started 10 games and scored a goal with two assists. First-year defenders Nick Gartner, Jack Maher and Greg Hyde join the team along with first-year midfielder Benjamin Wagoner and Marco LaRocca and first-year forward Noah Kormanyos. First-year goalkeeper Mitch Capitula will add depth behind Medd as well.
The Knights open with the Penn State Behrend Invitational before returning home for non-conference contests against Morrisville (Sept. 8) and Skidmore (Sept. 9). The team begins SUNYAC play on Sept. 22 with a home match against Buffalo State. Geneseo finishes its regular season with three consecutive home contests beginning Oct. 20 with Potsdam before the SUNYAC Tournament begins on Saturday, Oct. 28.
