Mens Soccer Loses To Oneonta, 3-1

GENESEO N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Matt D'Amico scored his fifth goal of the season, but it was the Knights dropping a 3-1 decision against visiting Oneonta, Friday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's soccer action.

Geneseo (5-4-1, 1-2 SUNYAC) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. D'Amico took advantage of an Red Dragons' defensive mistake and got the ball inside of the box. His first shot was saved by Oneonta first year goalkeeper Ryan Wilson, but the ball fell back to D'Amico's feet and he slotted the ball under Wilson for the goal.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half, the Red Dragons drew level on an own goal. A failed clearance by the Geneseo defense resulted in a tie game going into halftime.

Oneonta (8-2, 3-0 SUNYAC) pulled ahead in the 59th minute after senior back Zach Southworth scored from close range. He was assisted on the play by senior midfielder Hans Purtell, who played in a nice pass from the left end line and into the path of Southworth for the goal.

The Red Dragons finished the scoring in the 81st minute. First-year forward Witman Hernandez scored after a kick save from Geneseo first-year goalkeeper Dillon Medd fell into his path inside the six-yard box.

Medd was stout in goal, recording a career high nine saves in the loss.

The Knights return to action Saturday (Oct.1) hosting New Paltz at 1:00 p.m.
