GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Alex Clar scored the match-winning goal in the 61st minute to lead the Knights to a 1-0 victory over visiting Houghton, Wednesday night.
The beginnig of the match was marked by a flurry of Geneseo offense as senior midfielder Matt D'Amico made his attacking presence felt very early on. D'Amico, along with sophomore forward Austin DeRidder, who started the game for the injured Ethan Gunty, were potent in attack all night long.
The first chance at goal for the Knights came in the eighth minute when D'Amico saw his shot go just wide. The midfielder also saw four chances of his denied in the first 25 minutes of the match, as Houghton was up to the challenge, seeing off all of the Knights' attacking challenges in the first half.
The deadlock was broken 16 minutes into the second half through the left foot of Clar. Some lovely skill on the ball was shown in the right hand side of the box by DeRidder, who held up the ball nicely and waited for a run to be made into the box. DeRidder then squared the ball into the six-yard box to the on-running Clar, who finished into the side netting of the far post.
First-year Geneseo goal keeper Liam Dole had four saves in his first collegiate start, including a save diving to his left on a Houghton volley in the 77th minute.
The Knights finish a four match homestand on Saturday, hosting Hobart at 7:00 p.m.
