GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore attackman Kyle Wanamaker and senior attackman Tim Wright tallied two goals apiece as the Knights used a fast start to defeat visiting Oneonta, 10-5, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon at College Stadium.
With the victory, Geneseo (9-5, 3-3 SUNYAC) clinched its first postseason berth since 2012. Seeded fourth for the SUNYAC Tournament, the Knights will travel to top-seeded Cortland on Wednesday (May 3) for a semifinal bout slated for a 4:00 p.m. face-off.
Geneseo entered halftime having built a 6-0 lead, including a pair of early goals from Wright. Oneonta (3-11, 0-6), however, scored the first four goals of the third quarter to pull within 6-4. The Knights went on to net four of the final five goals of the game, including both of Wannamaker's tallies. Senior midfielder Drew Madarasz and first-year midfielder Michael Leveroni also scored single goals down the stretch as the Knights picked-up the home victory on Senior Day.
Geneseo junior goalkeeper Michael Yehl made 10 stops, while classmate Mark Friske took all 19 face-offs, winning 12 and picking up a pair of ground balls. Madarasz led all players with five ground balls on the afternoon.
The Red Dragons got four of its five goals out of sophomore attackman Stephen Panno, while sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Helfman made 11 saves.
Geneseo honored 10 members of the Class of 2017 in a pre-game ceremony, including Wright, Madarasz, Mike Bates, Dane Bentley, Michael Engstrom, Ryan Gulbransen, Nick Jonasse, Erik Legenhausen, Thomas Piazza, and Sean Tomkinson.
