Men's Lacrosse Falls Short Of Potsdam, 9-7

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Joe Chiara totaled two goals and an assist while junior midfielder Sean Tomkinson added two goals, but it was visiting Potsdam earning the 9-7 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's lacrosse play, Saturday.

Potsdam (9-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) used a 4-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to take a 6-3 lead it would not relinquish. Geneseo (5-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) pulled within one, 8-7, with 1:49 left in the fourth quarter, but Bears' senior attackman Ed Doherty, who finished with three goals and an assist, scored with 1:25 left in regulation to put the game out of reach.

Potsdam opened the scoring at 13:28 of the first quarter on a goal from the top of the crease by junior attackman Berkley Stone. The Knights later took the lead with a pair of goals 10 seconds apart, including a short dump-off by junior attackman Tim Wright to Chiara for a close-range tally before sophomore defenseman Ryan Cates picked up a ground ball on the ensuing face-off and slung home an unassisted goal with 5:37 on the clock. Doherty evened the score with his first goal at 4:21 as the teams headed to the second quarter knotted, 2-2.

Geneseo first-year attackman Kyle Wanamaker scored on an unassisted shot at 7:59 of the second quarter, but Potsdam senior midfielder Pat Bonafede started the visitors' decisive run with a shot over his right shoulder inside the left post at 7:01. Junior midfielder Matt Moran scored on a 12-yard shot from the point at 2:10 as the Bears headed into halftime with a 4-3 edge.

Senior midfielder Brian Martin dodged from the left side and scored from close range to kick off the third quarter at 12:53 before Stone struck again at 11:49 to stake Potsdam to the 6-3 advantage.

Tomkinson got into the action with his first tally at 9:55, but Martin answered with a long shot from the point at 6:19 for the 7-4 lead. Tomkinson scored again at 3:24 on a low diving shot inside the left post after a run from behind the cage to bring the home team within two, 7-5, after three quarters of play.

Doherty struck again to open the fourth-quarter scoring at 10:36 to build Potsdam's lead back to 8-5. With 8:57 remaining in regulation, Gulbransen took advantage of a fallen Bear defender on the right side of the crease and hit a cutting Chiara for a short dunk into the net. With 1:49 on the clock, Gulbransen got off a shot as he was knocked down in front of the Potsdam goal and scored to make it a one-point deficit, but Doherty later iced the game with a shot inside the left post from five yards away as Potsdam won its ninth-consecutive victory.

Geneseo returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 13) with a mid-week trip to take on SUNYAC foe Brockport at 4:00 p.m.
