Men's Lacrosse Moves Past Oswego, 12-6, In SUNYAC Opener

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Michael Engstrom and first-year attackman Zachary DeBottis each totaled three goals and an assist to lead the Knights to a 12-6 victory over visiting Oswego in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's lacrosse opener for both squads.

DeBottis started the Knights (5-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) off at 12:04 of the first quarter after shaking off a defender to score on a short drive to the Laker cage before junior attackman Tim Wright took a nice feed from sophomore attackman Ryan Kelly and scored to put Geneseo up 2-0 with 11:14 on the clock.

Oswego (4-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) got on the board at 9:07 before tallies by junior midfielder Sean Tomkinson at 7:00 and Engstrom, man-up, at 3:00 put the home team on top, 4-1, at the end of the first quarter.

DeBottis netted a man-down goal at 10:07 off an Oswego turnover before Engstrom cashed in a DeBottis feed with a 10-yard rip in front of the cage that made it a 6-1 game with 6:21 left in the second quarter. Oswego put a man-up goal on the board at 2:33, but it was junior attackman Ryan Gulbransen notching a tally with four seconds on the clock to stake the Knights to a 7-2 lead after 30 minutes of play.

DeBottis completed the hat-trick with an unassisted dunk at 7:39 of the third quarter as Geneseo led, 8-4, heading into the fourth quarter. The Knights scored three-unanswered tallies in the first four minutes of the final period to build an 11-4 lead that put the game out of reach as Geneseo earned its third win in four outings.

Sophomore goalie Michael Yehl was credited with 11 saves to preserve the victory as Oswego finished the game with a 35-30 advantage in shots.

The Knights return to action next Saturday (Apr. 9), hosting Potsdam at 12:00 p.m.
