GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior attackman Sam Thompson scored two goals but it was St. John Fisher holding on for a 5-4 men's lacrosse victory, Saturday afternoon. It was the Knights' fifth one-goal defeat of the season.
St. John Fisher senior attackman Jeff Wester tallied two goals while first-year midfielder Tim Wagner was credited with what proved to be the game-winning tally with 12:08 left in the fourth quarter.
"Our entire defensive unit did a great job today, but we needed to make some offensive adjustments to possess the ball that we just didn't make," said Geneseo head coach Jim Lyons. "Those little things are what make the difference in one-goal games."
Following a scoreless first half, the Cardinals (7-4) took a 2-0 lead with 8:38 on the second-quarter clock. Thompson got things going with back-to-back goals to knot the game, 2-2, with 2:55 left in the half before St. John Fisher closed the first period out with a goal with 36 seconds to play to carry a one-goal lead into intermission.
The Knights (3-7) netted the first two goals of the third quarter as sophomore attackman Ryan Gulbransen scored at 12:17 before junior midfielder Zach Yehl converted a man-up opportunity at 9:21. Wester tallied his second goal of the day with 1:59 to play in the third quarter to tie the game, 4-4, and set up the decisive fourth quarter.
Geneseo senor goalie Ryan Zaremba and St. John Fisher senior counterpart Jamie Campagna were each credited with 11 saves as the two teams each compiled 22 shots on the afternoon.
The Knights return to action next Saturday, hosting Oswego at 1:00 p.m. in State University Of New York Athletic Conference action.
