BROCKPORT, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore midfielder Joe Chiara scored three-straight goals, including the game-tying tally with :30 left in regulation and the overtime game-winner with 1:13 on the clock to lead the Knights to a 7-6 comeback victory at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's lacrosse, Wednesday.
Geneseo trailed, 6-3, at the start of the fourth quarter, but tallies by sophomore attackman Ryan Gulbransen at 11:41 and Chiara at 10:47 pulled the Knights within one, 6-5. With the final minute ticking down, Brockport was called for a pushing penalty that gave Geneseo a man-up opportunity that Chiara cashed in off a feed from junior midfielder Zach Yehl with :30 on the clock. The Golden Eagles won the ensuing faceoff but their final shot went wide of the cage with :03 left as the teams headed to overtime.
Chiara tallied the game winner off junior attackman Steven Cregan's fourth assist of the day as the Knights earned their first SUNYAC win of the season.
"I thought we played our first complete game today," said head coach Jim Lyons. "We really didn't have one bad quarter and came to play a full 60 minutes. Joe (Chiara) put us on his back and made some good decisions at the end. In the fourth quarter, we didn't wait for something bad to happen and, instead, played with a lot of confidence and made something good happen.
Senior goalie Ryan Zaremba was credited with 15 saves in the victory as Brockport built a 33-22 advantage in shots. Cregan also scored a second-quarter goal as the SUNYAC's leading scorer finished the day with five points.
Geneseo returns to action on Saturday, hosting St. John Fisher at 1:00 p.m.
