Men's Lacrosse Falls Short Of Plattsburgh, 12-11
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior attackman Steven Cregan scored three goals and two assists while junior attackman Sam Thompson added three goals but it was Plattsburgh holding off the Knights for a 12-11 victory in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's lacrosse opener for both teams. The game was played on a cold and rainy afternoon that deteriorated into snow by the fourth quarter at Monroe Community College's DiMarco Field.
The two teams traded five goals apiece during the first two quarters before Geneseo (2-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) scored two unanswered to lead 7-5 at halftime. Plattsburgh scored the only two goals of the third quarter to knot the game back up, 7-7, heading into the fourth.
Plattsburgh (7-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) went on a 3-1 run to lead 10-8 with 8:01 remaining in regulation, but Geneseo responded with a pair of goals in just over a minute to tie it back up, 10-10, with 6:00 on the clock. Plattsburgh scored a man-up goal with 3:38 on the clock, but Geneseo sophomore midfielder Joe Chiara notched his second goal of the day for the ninth tie of the afternoon, 11-11, with 2:08 to go.
The Cardinals won the ensuing faceoff before Brendan Damm scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 1:33 left in the game. Plattsburgh won the final face-off, but turned the ball over giving the Knights one final shot at the equalizer with 42 second on the clock. Following a timeout, Geneseo junior midfielder Steve Aziz took a shot that was saved by Cardinal goalie Andrew Hauk and Plattsburgh took control of the loose ball to seal the win.
Senior goalie Ryan Zaremba made 14 saves in his first start since suffering a knee injury in the third quarter of the season-opener versus Morrisville. Plattsburgh built a 48-35 advantage in shots, while winning 18-of-25 face-offs for the game, including 16-of-22 by Joe Eisman.
Geneseo returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 2), hosting top-ranked RIT at 4:00 p.m.
