CANTON, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore midfielder Joe Chiara scored three goals while junior attackman Steven Cregan added two goals and two assists, but it was St. Lawrence holding off the Knights for a 8-7 victory, Tuesday.
Trailing, 6-1, with 11:35 left in the third period, Geneseo (2-3) out-scored the Saints, 5-1, over the next 17 mintutes to make it a one-goal game, 7-6, with midway through the fourth-quarter.
"You can't spot a good team like that over a half of lacrosse and expect to win," said head coach Jim Lyons. "Once we started playing with urgency, we were good and I was happy with how we came back. But you have to come prepared to play from the start."
Cregan tallied at 9:29, before Chiara found the net with 3:20 on the third-quarter clock. St. Lawrence won the ensuing face-off and scored eight seconds later to lead, 7-3, but junior attackman Sam Thompson beat the third-period horn with a tally with :01 on the clock to make it a 7-4 game heading into the fourth.
Goals by Chiara at 9:12 and junior midfielder Steve Aziz at 7:40 pulled Geneseo within one with 7:40 to play in regulation. St. Lawrence (5-1) scored to make it a two-goal edge, 8-6, with 3:17 to play, before the Knights pulled back within one with 1:30 on the clock on Chiara's third of the game.
St. Lawrence won the crucial next face-off, but senior defenseman Kyle Kerrigan caused a turnover to give the visitors one final shot at the equalizer. Junior midfielder Zach Yehl would put a shot on net with 18 seconds showing, but Saints' goalie Nick Ford would make his 12th save of the day to preserve the victory.
Geneseo senior keeper Adam Perri was credited with 14 saves in the loss.
Geneseo is slated to host Plattsburgh on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the State University of New York Athletic Conference opener for both teams, but the game could potentially be moved due to frozen field conditions. Check back throughout the week for the latest update on the game.
