ROCHESTER, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior attackman Steven Cregan totaled five goals and two assists while junior attackman Sam Thompson added three goals for his second-straight hat trick to lead the Knights to a 15-10 victory over Lycoming at a game played at Monroe Community College's DiMarco Field, Tuesday.
"Ultimately, we played faster from top to bottom than we did on Saturday," said head coach Jim Lyons. "Bottom line, to be successful, we had to play harder and we did just that in every aspect.
Thompson's first goal put the Knights on the board at the 13:03 mark of the first quarter to start a 5-2 run to open the game. The Warriors (0-5) scored at 5:37 to pull within two, but goals by Cregan and junior midfielder Stev Aziz gave Geneseo a 7-3 lead after the first quarter.
After trading goals in the second period, the Knights built a 11-6 advantage with 5:01 on the third-period clock on goals by Thompson, sophomore midfielder Brad Willows, and Cregan.
Lycoming would score a goal with 24 seconds left in the third, but Geneseo would open the fourth quarter on a 3-1 run on tallies by Cregan, junior midfielder Zach Yehl and junior attackman Brent Lawless to lead 14-8 at 3:47.
Geneseo will next be in action against Clarkson on Saturday in game to be played at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orland, Fla.
