GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior goaltender Matt Leon totaled 26 saves for his first career shutout to lead the No. 6 Knights past No. 12 Buffalo State, 3-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Saturday.
Tied for third with Buffalo State in the latest conference standings, the win bumped Geneseo (15-5-3, 9-4-1 SUNYAC) into a tie for second in the conference.
After playing a scoreless first period, Geneseo senior defenseman Derek Stahl netted his second career goal on a slap shot from the point that gave a 1-0 lead midway through the second. Senior forward Stephen Collins and sophomore forward Anthony Marra were credited with assists on the play.
The Knights struck again after junior defenseman Mitch Ferguson connected with first-year forward Conlan Keenan on a lengthy outlet pass at the Bengals' blue line. Keenan one-timed a pass to sophomore linemate Arthur Gordon, who skated in front of the Bengals crease and slid a pass back to Keenan for a close-range finish that made it a 2-0 Knights' lead with 7:30 to play in the second period.
With 2:33 left in regulation, senior forward Trevor Hills finished a two-on-one breakaway for the final tally as Keenan and Collins both recorded assists on the goal.
Geneseo will return to action next Friday (Feb. 17), hosting SUNYAC-rival Plattsburgh for a 7:00 p.m. face-off.
