BRUNSWICK, Maine – SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Conlan Keenan totaled two goals and an assist while senior forward Trevor Hills added two goals to lead the No. 6/7 Knights to a 7-4 victory at Bowdoin on the first day of the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic, Saturday.
Sophomore goalie Devin McDonald was credited with a season-high 30 saves as Geneseo (5-1-1) won its third-consecutive outing.
Bowdoin jumped on the board 45 seconds into the game on the first of three tallies on the day by Cody Todesco, but Hills answered 21 seconds later after collecting a lose puck behind the Polar Bear goal and wrapping around the left corner to score inside the far post to knot the game, 1-1.
With 13:31 on the clock, Keenan had a close-range shot saved by Polar Bear goalie Peter Cronin, but first-year forward Andrew Romano was on the front of the crease to backhand the rebound into the net for the 2-1 Knights' lead.
With under three minutes left in the first period, senior forward Connor Anthoine put a puck on the Polar Bear goal from the left wing that senior forward RJ Burns tipped past Cronin with 2:32 on the clock. Bowdoin responded just over a minute later after Camil Blanchet put a rebound past McDonald at 1:21 as the visitors carried a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
Geneseo converted on the power play for the lone goal of the second-period following a Bowdoin interference penalty at 14:40. Sophomore forward Arthur Gordon cycled a pass down low on the left wing to senior forward Jack Ceglarski, who slid a pass into the low slot where Keenan scored on a wrist shot for a 4-2 lead with 13:05 on the clock.
The Knights scored twice in the first minute of the third period, notching a pair of tallies in a nine-second span to build a 6-2 lead. Following a Bowdoin roughing penalty after 12 seconds of play, Hills scored on a shot from the low-left wing off a feed from sophomore forward Anthony Marra with 42 seconds elapsed in the period. On the ensuing face-off, a Polar Bear offensive zone turnover led to a tally by first-year forward Devin Brink that staked the visitors to a four-goal edge at 19:10.
Bowdoin got one back after a pair of penalties put the Knights down two players. Todesco completed the hat-trick after finishing a 2-on-1 break with 12:43 remaining, but it was Keenan beating the Polar Bear defense for a short-handed tally off a nice pass by senior defenseman Derek Stahl with 5:25 remaining to close the scoring.
Geneseo will be back in action on Sunday, taking on host Colby at 4:00 p.m.
