MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team was ranked No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division III Men's Ice Hockey Preseason Poll, released Monday.
Geneseo received a No. 5 ranking in the final 2015-16 poll after finishing with a 20-5-6 record, including its first SUNYAC Championship in 10 years while advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament Frozen Four for the second time in three seasons.
In three SUNYAC Tournament games, the Knights out-scored their opponents by a conference-record 17-3 margin, including a 7-1 victory at top-seeded Plattsburgh in the championship game.
After NCAA Tournament home wins over Salve Regina, 7-1, and Williams, 2-1, the Knights' run came to a close against eventual national champion Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the national semifinals, which were played at historic Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Stevens Point was picked to defend their title.
Geneseo kicks off the 2016-17 season on Friday, Oct. 28, with a road contest at Nazareth. The Knights' first home game of the season is slated for Friday, Nov. 4 versus SUNYAC foe Cortland.
