BROCKPORT N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Justin Scharfe tallied a goal in the first period and an assist in the second period as the No. 14 Knights defeated Brockport, 3-2, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) ice hockey, Friday.
"Tonight was a good road win for us. We won the specal teams battle by a slim margin and it proved to be the difference in the game," said head coach Chris Schultz.
Geneseo got on the board 6:13 into the opening period on a goal by junior forward Ryan Stanimir, assisted by first-year forward Stephen Collins and junior forward Tyler Brickler, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Scharfe would give Geneseo a 2-0 lead off assists from senior forward Jonathan Sucese and first-year forward Connor Anthoine. However, Brockport was able to score a goal of its own to make it a one-goal game just before intermission with a goal with 26 second on the clock.
In the second period, Brockport tied it up, 2-2, at 6:18, but the tie didn't last long as junior defenseman Jack Caradonna scored the eventual game-winner two minutes later on the power play to push the Knights to victory.
Sophomore goalie Nick Horrigan made 29 saves to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at Geneseo for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
