ARLINGTON, Va. - SUNY Geneseo junior guard Zack Panebianco netted a game-high 23 points in his Knights debut as he led the team to a season-opening victory over Marymount, 87-72, on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Fifth-Annual Pablo Coto Tip-off Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Geneseo scored the first eight points of the game and opened up a 26-11 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Quinn Carey with 11:22 remaining in the first half.
Sophomore forward Tommy Eastman capped the first half with a layup that put the Knights ahead, 51-29, heading into the halftime break.
Geneseo led by as many as 29 points, taking a 66-37 lead when Carey buried another three with 14:20 to go in the game.
The Saints cut down the Geneseo lead to 13 points in the final minutes, but the Knights held on to earn the season-opening win.
The Knights shot 30-for-55 (54.5%) from the floor, including a 10-for-16 (62.5%) from behind the arc while holding Marymount to a 36.4% clip.
Carey finished 6-for-8 from behind the arc for 18 points, while Eastman scored 14 and senior guard Kevin Crockett added 10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Geneseo shot 17-for-20 from the foul line while Marymount went 17-for-18 from the stripe.
The Knights will play again on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of Randolph-Macon and Ramapo in the championship round of the Pablo Coto Tip-off Tournament hosted by Marymount.
