ONEONTA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore guard CJ Burke scored all 13 of his points in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome the Oneonta Red Dragons as the Knights were edged 83-79 on Friday night by their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe.
Burke added seven rebounds and three steals while senior guard Justin Ringen netted a game-high 27 points for the Knights (12-10, 7-8 SUNYAC). Senior guard John Decker pitched in with 14 points while fellow senior Jack Eisenberg registered a team-high five assists.
The Knights led by as many as six points in the first half, jumping out to a 14-8 lead on a three from first-year guard Tommy Eastman. The Red Dragons battled back to tie the game at 23-23 later in the half and led by as many as seven points in the frame. At the half, the two teams entered their locker rooms with Oneonta leading 46-42.
In the second half, Geneseo leaned on Burke to prop up the offense. The sophomore scored eight straight Geneseo points followed by a Ringen layup to cap a 10-3 run that tied the game at 62-62 with 10:44 to play. The contest went back and forth with the Knights grabbing a 75-74 lead on an Eastman lay-in with 3:38 remaining.
Geneseo had a chance to extend their lead but went 0-for-4 from the floor on their next four offensive possessions allowing Oneonta to grab the lead and hold it. A pair of layups from Burke in the final seconds cut into the deficit but it wasn't enough as the Knights ultimately fell 83-79.
