MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior guard John Decker scored a career-high 41 points while senior guard Justin Ringen added 36 points to lead the Knights to a 103-93 victory at Morrisville, Tuesday.
Decker connected on 6-of-12 three-pointers, while Ringen finished the evening 7-of-12 from long range as the team combined to hit 14-of-32 three-pointers along with 21-of-24 free-throw attempts for the game.
Decker's performance tied for the third-highest single-game point total in school history and was only the ninth 40-point output ever by a Knight. It was the most points scored since Matt Spadoni totaled 41 points opposite Nazareth on January 10, 1996 and was only three points shy of the record 44 points compiled by Scott Fitch verus Hobart on January 12, 1994.
Geneseo (3-1) came out firing, connecting on eight of its first 12 shots, including seven three-pointers, to take a 23-11 lead with 14:07 on the clock.
A dunk by junior forward Jordi Menkhorst staked the Knights to a 17-point lead, 36-19, with 9:09 remaining, but Morrisville finished the half on a 24-10 run to pull withing three, 46-43.
The Mustangs took their first lead of the game, 50-48, at the 18:12 mark of the second half and built a five-point edge, 66-61, at 13:41. However, a three-pointer by junior guard Kevin Crockett capped an 8-0 Geneseo run that gave the visitors a 69-66 lead it would not relinquish.
Ringen collected 25 points in the second half, including 4-of-6 three-pointers, while Decker totaled 17 points in the second half, including 9-of-9 free-throws.
Geneseo will return home to open SUNYAC play next Friday (Dec. 2), hosting New Paltz at 5:30 P.M.
