GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior guard John Decker scored a game-high 20 points while senior guard Jonathan Cohen added 18 points on six three-pointers to lead the Knights to a 79-64 victory over visiting Medaille, Wednesday, in the season-opener.
Both teams had to shake off some off-season cobwebs in the early going. Tied, 9-9, with 11:39 on the first-half clock, The visiting Mavericks (0-1) used a 9-3 spurt to take an 18-12 lead at 8:16. Medaille built its largest lead of the game, 23-15, at the 5:01 mark before back-to-back Cohen three-pointers capped a 10-2 Geneseo run to knot the game, 25-25, at 2:12. Medaille scored four of the final six points to close the half with a 29-27 lead.
Decker tied the game with a lay-up to start the second half before Geneseo (1-0) connected on three-pointers on five of its next eight posessions to take a 44-37 lead at the 15:47 mark that it would not relinquish.
The Knights got out to a 58-42 lead over the next four minutes with a 14-5 spurt and led by as many as 20 down the stretch while shooting better than 66 percent (18-for-27) in the second half to pull away.
Senior point guard Jack Eisenberg totaled 12 points and five assists while only comitting one turnover on the night. Sophomore forward Jack Manke led all rebounders with 11 boards while adding seven points to lead the Knights' post players.
Medaille (0-1) junior forward Michael Hollenbeck logged a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Geneseo returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 19), taking on The College of New Jersey on the first day of action at the Penn State-Harrisburg Tip-Off Classic at 3:00 p.m. Consolation and championship games are slated for Sunday (Nov. 20) with times to be determined.
